The Berry that Changes the Taste of Foods to Sweet

Yes, its called the miracle berry, no it's not a miracle ! Even though the name suggests something miraculous, the miracle berry really is not a miracle it is merely a natural phenomenon !

Nature has the power and versatility to produce the strangest and weirdest of plants with equally strange characteristics, these plants all developed through the phenomenon of nature and their quest for survival fundamentally changed the properties of the plant through natural selection.

Exactly how a berry which when eaten enhances the flavour of bitter and sours foods developed is not so mysterious if we look at nature in detail. Perhaps hundreds of thousands of years ago animals such as birds or fruit bats ate the fruit of one natural hybrid miracle berry tree and then ate other bitter and sour fruits and noticed that these usually bitter fruits tasted just a tiny bit sweeter than normal. Then as nature took its course the animal began to subconsciously associate the miracle berry with the enhanced taste of these other fruits. Those miracle berry trees that had the best effect then survived more as their fruits were eaten and the seeds were discarded allowing another miracle berry plant to grow.

Exactly why this happens is through the genetics of the plant. We can see in nature the development of a variety of humming birds each of which has a bill that seems to be specifically designed to fit the flower that is their main food source but we know this shape of bill and flower did not just appear overnight. Both formed over many tens of thousands of years through many generations of the humming bird and this example is instrumental in showing the relationship between animals and plants flourishing side by side, each relying on the other for survival.

As the miracle berry tree moved through generation after generation larger mammals would also notice the effects, and as intelligent mammals they would consciously register the slight effects of the miracle berry and know it as the berry that changes the taste of other foods to sweet. Then tens of thousands of years later the miracle berry has developed in order to survive. It's survival depends on other creatures eating its fruits and discarding the seeds. Those generations of miracle berry plants which had survived were the ones that bore fruits which had these taste changing properties. As generation after generation of miracle berry plants passed by, each having their own genetic variation, then those whose genetic variation emphasized the taste changing properties in it's fruits then had more chance of survival until finally the fruit almost seems like a miracle !
